$0.99 Patches!

If there is one thing I can’t stand is not being able to organize patches because they are included in ReFills (although I still love refills). One thing I don’t like about refills is paying for a bunch of patches I don’t want and only using a a select few. What if we could just buy the patches we want. Preview each one before downloading it and knowing exactly what you are getting into.

I’ve never offered up any of the premium patches I’ve created. As much as it hurts to say, I agree that my free patches kinda suck. I’ve come to a point where I no longer need update my software to the newest version. Reason 6, for the most part, has everything I need. It’s just not practical for me to continue updating. The catch for me is that I want to continue providing material for the latest version of Reason and have a website to host this material.

This is where the $0.99 patches come in. Money brought in by these patches will be used to support this website and pay for the future software updates. With this being said, I present to you the first patch!

This patch is called “The Spiders Snarl.”

New Announcements from Propellerhead

Today, March 20, 2012, Propellerhead announced an app of iOS and an update to Reason 6 (and Essentials).

The new iOS app is called “Figure.” It was submitted to Apple last Friday so we should see it appear in the app store in a week or so. Coverage from the announcement says that the app includes Thor and Kong making the app a mobile lite version of Reason. No need to worry about burning a hole in your pocket for an app you may or may not like. Figure is said to be $1 USD, and that’s not an introduction price.

The Second announcement was Re Rack Extension. A rack extension that allows 3rd party developers to create devices for use in Reason 6. The devices are coded specifically for Reason and are NOT plug-ins. So no need to worry about Reason losing its stability! Best of all, this feature is included in the FREE 6.5 update expected to be release before summer fully starts! Read more about ReRack here:

Check back here at brandonsreason.com for a video of the announcement from Propellerhead later today.

Combinator: Keyboard Split

If you feel like you don’t have enough keyboards to cover everything you want to do in a live show or just plan on being creative in the studio then the keyboard split is perfect. If you have a 49 key keyboard or higher then don’t consider getting an extra keyboard, learn how to split your sounds amongst the keys. That is exactly what I show you how to do in this weeks video. As an added bonus I’ve created a patch that you can download for free to see how things work before diving in and creating your own!

Download: http://www.box.com/s/3dxpdegvjvvh3ob57377

NOTE: the file is a “.record” file and is compatible with Reason 5/Record 1.5 and Reason 6. When opening with Reason 6 simply resave the file to convert it to a “.reason” file.

Combinator: Assigning Knobs and Buttons

This is week 3 of exploring the Combinator. This week we look into assigning knobs and buttons on the combinator to knobs and buttons on devices enclosed. I also talk about the practical use for this for live and studio music. In the video I demonstrate with a patch that I created (Valor&Mischief) which you can download from the link below.

Combinator: Use for Live Performances

There are several ways to use Reason (and Record) during a live show. Out of what I have tried I have found two that I prefer. These two ways are to use multiple save files or use one save file with multiple combinators.

The first way is very easy to explain and the second I have recorded a video to show you how to apply it. Creating a save file for each song is as simple as it sounds. Simply open a new session in Reason and Record and load in your patches. Save that session as the song name and do the same for the rest of your songs. For a live show just open all those files at once, minimize them, and open them as you need to use them.

The second way I prefer to set up Reason for a live show is using combinators. Since explaining in writing is tedious and gets boring to read, I’ve created this video to show you exactly what you need to set everything up.

If there’s one thing I love about the Reason Community, it’s the amount of information it gives out for free. Check out this great site that was just launched March 1! It’s filled with lots of information that is organized and easily accessed.

Propellerhead Balance Review

For some reason (no pun intended) I can’t export video’s right now. My video editor crashes when exporting video. All i could manage to get out is the audio. There wasn’t too much visually happening anyways, so enjoy this audio version of my Balance Review.

I would also like to say thank you to Propellerhead for sending me the Balance. Read more about the balance here:

Reason 5 Review By Andrew Howson

Freelance journalism – reason review.

Propellerheads Reason is one of the easiest music softwares that there is to use. The structure of the program is just like a real life set-up and the sounds generated are so realistic.

To start off with I am going to review how easy reason is to set up once the software is open. There are two ways to create things in reason, either go to ‘create’ at the top (next to edit)

Or you can right click in any space in the reason window and go to create.

To start with, Reasons re-drum computer is a drum computer which lets you design a drum pattern with any sort of drum kit you have on your computer, you can pan left to right or visa versa, you can change any part of the drum kit whether it be the kick drum or the hi-hats you can change it to any sound you like.

Propellerhead have now put a Kong drum computer in Reason 5 comparable to the MPC. It has pads that you can press instead of just clicking along a row. On these pads, you can click towards the top for a higher velocity, and towards the bottom for a lower velocity.

On to the NN-XT Advanced sampler. In this sampler you can use your samples, import them in, and play them in any order you want them to be played. You can also have them on any key on any scale of the sampler.

On to the Dr Octo Rex Loop Player. This device is just like the old Dr rex loop Player but in the Octo Rex you can load up more loops and do more with them. You can cut them up, re-arrange them, do pitch changes, and change the tempo along with changing frequencies of the loop.

Now for the synthesizers. Malstrom, Subtractor, and Thor all really do the same sort of thing. They allow you to create basslines using different types of sounds such as, organ, bass guitar, piano etc. But I dont see the need in there being all three. Yes they all may do somethings a little differently but why not just make the one and make sure that it does everything that all three of them do with out having to waste time creating different instruments.

Time to move on to the the effects. The advanced reverb is some what easy to use. It is only a small effect but it is quite powerful when you want it to be. There are different types of knobs on the device for better customization. How wet you want the sound to be, how dry you want the sound to be and how spacey you want the reverberation to be.

Reason 6: Spectrum Analyzer

What is Reason missing? A Spectrum Analyzer. I’ve done my research and found the components in Reason to create one. I have also put together 2 videos, one explaining how it works and one explaining how to insert it into your mix. So check out these videos and start analyzing your spectrums!

Here’s a remix from last year. I never got around to finishing it up, but I like listening to it every once and a while anyways.
